Characteristics related to biosafety
Puntigrus tetrazona is native to Sumatra and Borneo in Indonesia, primarily in the Batang Hari drainage, with populations in Malay Peninsula tributaries.
EN
The native populations of Sumatra and Borneo/Greater Sunda region represent the principal geographical area in which natural genetic diversity of the species would be expected to occur.
EN
Puntigrus tetrazona is a benthopelagic species occurring in tropical freshwater habitats. It is associated with streams and quieter riverine environments, including clear or tannin-stained waters, often over sandy substrates or leaf litter and in areas containing submerged vegetation and woody material. A pH range of 6.0-8.0, water hardness of 5-19 dH, and temperatures of approximately 20-26 °C are reported. Its reported climatic range extends approximately from 6°N to 3°S and 95°E to 118°E.
EN
Native to Southeast Asia, principally Sumatra and Borneo in the Greater Sunda Islands. Records are particularly associated with freshwater drainage systems of Sumatra, Indonesia. The species has been widely transported through the international ornamental fish trade, is bred commercially in several countries, and has been introduced outside its native range. Some sources differ regarding the precise limits of the native distribution, particularly historical records from Borneo, Peninsular Malaysia and Thailand.
